DEMOGRAPHY |
The indicators are generally obtained from international organizations or government statistical offices. |
Population |
Refers to population estimate compiled by Census and Statistics Department, also called the "Hong Kong Resident Population". |
Households |
Refers to the domestic household figure compiled by Census and Statistics Department. Domestic household consists of a group of persons who live together and make common provision for essentials for living. These persons need not be related. If a person makes provision for essentials for living without sharing with other persons, he/she is also regarded as a household. In this case, the household is a one-person household. Households comprising only non-Hong Kong residents or Mobile Residents are not classified as domestic households. |
TELEPHONE NETWORK |
The indicators in this category refer to the fixed telephone network. |
Main telephone lines in operation |
The number of telephone lines connecting the subscriber's terminal equipment to the public switched network and which have a dedicated port in the telephone exchange equipment. |
% digital main lines |
Refers to the per cent of main lines connected to digital exchanges. This percentage is obtained by dividing the number of main lines connected to digital telephone exchanges by the total number of main lines. |
% residential main lines |
Refers to the per cent of main lines in residences. This percentage is obtained by dividing the number of main lines serving households (e.g. lines which are not used for business, government or other professional purposes or as public telephone stations) by the total number of main lines. |
Public payphones |
The total number of all types of public telephones, including coin and card operated public telephones. Public phones installed in private places should also be included. All public telephones regardless of capability (e.g. local or national calls only) should be counted. |
MOBILE SERVICES |
The indicators in this category refer to mobile (wireless) networks. |
Public mobile subscriptions |
Refers to subscriptions to public mobile services, including conventional mobile voice and/or data subscriptions by customers and subscriptions for machine type connections. |
Mobile subscriber penetration rate (%) |
The mobile subscriber penetration rate is obtained by dividing the number of mobile subscribers by the population in Hong Kong. It excludes machine type connections. |
Dedicated mobile data connections with download speeds higher than 256kbps |
Refers to total number of dedicated mobile data connections with download speeds higher than 256kbps. Includes dedicated mobile data connections on data SIMs, USB dongles and M2M connections, but excluding smartphone-based voice and data connections. |
OTHER SERVICES |
The indicators in this category refer to text and data communications and value-added network services. |
ISDN subscriptions |
The number of subscriptions to the Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN). It includes the number of subscriptions to both basic rate and primary rate interface service. |
ISDN B channel equivalents |
Converts the number of ISDN subscriber lines into their equivalent voice channels. The number of basic rate subscribers is multiplied by two and the number of primary rate subscribers is multiplied by 23 or 30 depending on the standard implemented. |
TRAFFIC |
The indicators in this category refer to the volume of traffic carried over the Public Switched Telephone Network. |
International outgoing telephone traffic |
Effective (completed) traffic originating in a given economy to destinations outside that economy. |
International incoming telephone traffic |
Effective (completed) traffic originating outside the economy with a destination inside the economy. |
International bothway telephone traffic |
The total international traffic handled in the economy, which is equal to the sum of the incoming and outgoing traffic. However, some economies also include transit traffic in this figure. |
STAFF |
The indicator in this category refers to the number of staff in the telecommunications service sector. |
Full-time telecommunications staff |
Figures refer to the number of persons engaged (other than those in the civil service) in the telecommunications industry. Persons engaged include: (i) individual proprietors, partners and persons having family ties with any of the proprietors or partners and working in the establishment without regular pay, who are actively engaged in the work of the establishment for at least 1 hour on the survey reference date; (ii) full-time salaried personnel/employees directly paid by the establishment and working directors of limited companies, both permanent and temporary, who are either at work (whether or not in Hong Kong) or temporarily absent from work (viz. those on sick leave, maternity leave, annual vacation or casual leave, and on strike) on the survey reference date; and (iii) part-time employees and employees on night/irregular shifts working for at least 1 hour on the survey reference date. |
TARIFFS |
Tariffs are expressed in local currency and include any relevant taxes. |
Connection fee for residential telephone service |
The one time charge involved in applying for residential telephone service. |
Connection fee for business telephone service |
Same as above but applied to business users. |
Monthly subscription for residential telephone service |
Refers to the recurring fixed charge for a residential subscriber to the PSTN. The charge covers the rental of the line but not the rental of the terminal (e.g. telephone set). |
Monthly subscription for business telephone service |
Same as above but applied to business subscribers. |
REVENUE |
The indicators in this category are in current prices and local currency. Caution should be taken in this category since the definition of telecommunication revenue varies across economies and is subject to different accounting policies. |
Total telecom services revenue |
Refers to earnings from the provision of telecommunications services. This includes revenue from provision of fixed telephone, mobile communications, text (telex, telegraph and facsimile), leased circuits and data communications services, as well as sales of related products. |
CAPITAL EXPENDITURE |
The indicator in this category refers to the annual investment in telecommunications networks. |
Annual investment in telecom |
Refers to expenditure associated with acquiring the ownership of telecommunications equipment infrastructure (including supporting land and buildings and intellectual and non-tangible property such as computer software). These include expenditure on initial installations and on additions to existing installations. |
BROADCASTING |
The indicators in this category refer to television broadcasting equipment and networks. |
Terrestrial multi-channel TV subscriptions |
Number of subscriptions to terrestrial multi-channel TV transmitted through fixed network (such as Hybrid Fibre Coaxial Cable (HFC), broadband network and Microwave Multi-point Distribution systems (MMDS)), and Satellite Master Antenna Television (SMATV). |
Home satellite antennas |
The number of home satellite antennas that can receive television broadcasting directly from satellites (i.e. Direct-To-Home (DTH).) |
